CChallenge Council Tax Band
How it works · six steps

Six steps. About twenty minutes of your time — then the Valuation Office’s clock starts.

From a postcode in our box to a refund in your bank, drawn out so you know exactly what we do, what you do, and what the Valuation Office Agency does next. No buy button on this page — we’ll send you to the free check first.

  • Free to check
  • No card needed
  • 14-day refund
  • We refuse to recommend weak cases
Step one

Free check (under a minute)

You enter a postcode. We fetch the property’s current Council Tax band from the Valuation Office Agency and pull the bands of similar nearby homes, then score the case Strong / Moderate / Weak / Don’t Pursue against the same evidence rules the VOA itself uses. No card, no email, no account.

Step two · the fork

The honest score — and where the road forks.

The score is the most important screen on this site. If your case is Strong or Moderate, the buy button appears. If it’s Weak or Don’t Pursue, it doesn’t — we won’t sell you a challenge we expect the VOA to reject. That refusal is the whole reason this product is trustworthy.

Pay £39 for your challenge.

Stripe Checkout opens. Your challenge lands in your inbox within a minute or two.

Step three

Pay £39 — only if the score recommends it.

Stripe Checkout handles the payment end to end — we never see your card. One-off price, no subscription, and no success fee, so you keep every penny of any refund. Card details are requested only after you’ve seen the score and decided to proceed.

Step four

Your challenge, in your inbox.

One email lands within a minute or two of payment: the email to send to the Valuation Office, with the evidence written in, and the VO 7455 form, part-filled. We recommend customising it first — about two minutes. Confirm your home’s details, swap a comparable you’d rather not include, widen the search to nearby postcodes, retune the letter’s tone (formal, firm or personal), or edit any paragraph by hand. We email you the updated version, and you can customise again within 14 days. No extra charge.

Step five

You complete the form, sign it and send.

Complete and sign the VO 7455 form, copy the email into a new message to [email protected], attach the form and send — faster, and you keep a timestamped record. Prefer post? Download the printable letter and send it with the form to Wycliffe House in Durham. We deliberately don’t submit on your behalf, because that would make us a regulated agent.

Step six

Decision — and a refund if you win.

It takes longer than most people expect: GOV.UK says an informal band review can take up to 12 months, and a formal proposal up to 4. If your band is lowered, the VOA tells your council, which recalculates your bill and repays or credits what you overpaid. It must repay it if you ask, and the letter to your council on your order page does the asking.

Typical timeline · informal review
Informal review
up to 12 months
Formal proposal
up to 4 months
If they hold the band
Step six · branch

If the VOA refuses to lower the band.

It depends on the route. A formal proposal — open to you if you’ve paid Council Tax on the property for under six months — can be appealed to the independent Valuation Tribunal for free. An informal band review can’t be appealed, but you can ask for another one at any time if you find new evidence. Your order page has chase letters and the right follow-up for your route. Most of this won’t happen; we wrote it because some of it will.

Letters for later, on your order page
  • A
    Chase letter
Checks the VOA has received your challenge.
  • B
    Status update request
A polite nudge while the review is under way.
  • C
The right next step for your route
A tribunal appeal note for a proposal, or a new-evidence letter for a band review.

We don’t represent you in any of these — that’s deliberately the line. You fill in the blanks and send each letter yourself.

What this is NOT

Plain about what we don’t do.

Honesty is the product. If a competing service tells you otherwise on any of these, that’s your cue.

Not a subscription.

£39 is one-off. We never charge you again. No renewal, no auto-debit, no follow-up sales.

No success fee.

We don't take a slice of your backdated refund. The flat fee is everything you pay us, ever.

Not a regulated tax service.

We don't submit on your behalf — you sign and send. That's deliberate: it keeps us out of regulated territory, and it keeps the signature where it belongs.

Not affiliated with HMRC or the VOA.

We use their published data; we are independent. If a service promises insider relationships at the VOA, walk away.

Ready when you are
